IN FAIRNESS by John Lapus a.k.a. Sweet

In fairness

12:48 am on Thursday, September 27, 2007

Sa mga naiyak at the same time natawa, that’s the idea. I always make it a point to laugh at the things that make me cry. Anyway, na-pressure tuloy akong sundan. In fairness, nakaisip ako ng bago.

Before, when I type those two words, ang nalalagay ko, “infairness.” Tanga.

Favorite ko ang “in fairness” kasi napaka-positive. It’s like seeing the good in things that are bad.

It’s like seeing the sunshine after the rain.

Namatay ang tatay ko September of last year. In fairness, nabuhay ang career ko sa GMA the week after.

It’s like seeing the silver lining in every dark cloud.

In fairness, napahiya ako nang makilala kita.

Hada ba ‘yan? Pakilala mo kami.”

Nag-text back ako, “Naku mga sisters, mga anak-mayaman. UST. Friendly lang.”

Anyway, pinakilala ko pa din sila. Kanya-kanyang chika na ang mga bakla. Yung type ko, binakuran ko talaga. Hahaha.

In fairness, nagbago naman daw. Na-explain naman niya sa akin na it was actually the boys who were aloof to me kaya ayaw nila akong makasama at first. Point taken, kasi madalas mangyari ‘yon.

In fairness, some of them still text me once in a while. Sa ibang lugar na sila gumigimik, minsan daw with my friends. Last time I heard, some of them pinasok ng mga friends ko sa trabaho.

I promised myself na hindi na ako kakaibigan ng mga boys other than the ones I have now. Magastos. Talo ako in comparison sa ugali. Hahaha. Aminado naman ako.

In fairness, nabago ‘yan last week. I think it was a Wednesday night. Lumapit yung isa. Picture daw with me. Nakainom na ang mga loko. Inofferan ako ng beer. I told them hindi ako nagbi-beer at tequila girl ako.

Ang ending, nag-bonding kami to death that night. Nakakatawa yung question and answer portion namin. Prangkahan—from sexual experiences to sex organs, pati na rin love life at career. Pucha, first time ako nalibre ng lalaki ng drinks. That time, muntik na akong manghipo for the first time. Hahaha.

I asked them kung ano ‘yon.

Tuwang-tuwa ang mga new friends kong San Beda boys dahil champion sila for two consecutive years. In fairness, sa na-experience ko with them, champion din ako.

CUT! by John Lapus a.k.a. Sweet

Cut!

12:27 am on Saturday, September 22, 2007

It was September 20 of last year when I got a call from Ms. Lani Mercado at around 7:00 pm. We saw each other the week before, when I guested on QTV 11’s Moms. She got my number because she wanted me to host the birthday party of her husband, Senator Bong Revilla, the following weekend.

Nagpapamasahe ako when I recieved her call. I thought the call was about Bong’s birthday party. I was wrong.

JOHN: Hello. Yes, Ms. Lani? What can I do for you?

LANIE: Hi, Sweet. I don’t know how to say this. Your father passed away an hour ago. Nasa PGH (Philippine General Hospital) si Bong ngayon taking care of everything. I will text you the number of Direk Felix so you can coordinate with him. Magkakasama sila doon.

I was visualizing the face of my father pero hindi kumakagat. I was thinking of the last time I saw him pero hindi ko din maalala. Ang dami kong inisip, but honestly, I felt nothing.

Some of my friends, nag-text na agad sa akin ng “condolence.” I told them not to worry at pupunta talaga ako, tatapusin ko lang ang massage session ko.

Bong. Paalis na daw kasi sila sa PGH. Saktong pagdating ko, padating na din sila. Si Bong ang sumalubong sa akin. He hugged me and whispered, “kilala mo na ba si Adora?” I said yes.

Adora is the woman na kinakasama ng tatay ko bago siya namatay. May isa silang anak named Joey Anne, who is now a nursing student in Lipa, Batangas. Doon yata sila nakatira. Hahaha. I hugged both Adora and my half-sister.

By 10:00 p.m. na dumating sina Rudy Fernandez at Phillip Salvador, who were also friends of my father.

I did my best na magmukhang malungkot when they interviewed me.

Bong and Kuya Ipe agreed, so I asked the Paz staff kung pwede.

Kaloka!

PAZ: John Lapus, excuse me. Tatay mo pala ang namatay.

JOHN: Opo.

Hindi pwede ‘yon since a death certificate is a legal document.

JOHN: Ah, ok.

So ang ending kailangan kong tawagan si Nanay to double check all the facts about my father. Maryosep!

JOHN: Hello, Madir.

NANAY: O, ano ng nangyari? Tawagan mo Ate mo. Gusto na niyang pumunta diyan. Ano daw ang ‘kinamatay? Diyos ko naman. Huhuhu…

JOHN: Ay, hindi ka pa pala ready. Tawag na lang ako ulit.

Binaba ko ang phone and called when she texted me na ok na daw siya. Ayokong naririnig or nakikitang umiiyak ang Nanay ko.

By 3:00 a.m., pinasundo ko na sa driver ko ang Ate ko. Ang feeling ko, calm na siya by the time she arrives. I did not want her to be hystercial since siya pregnant noon.

Heart attack! Heart attack!” But I understood her reaction. Very close sila ng Tatay namin. Kay Tatay niya unang sinabi when she got pregnant at the age of 16. Ganon sila ka-close.

Eto na ang punchline. Since naunang dumating sina Adora at Joey Anne sa Paz by 4:00 a.m., natutulog na sila sa family room.

How I wished that things were simpler, na sana pareho silang nandoon ng Ate ko sa iisang kuwarto.

So kailangan kong maghanap ng paglilibingan sa Tatay ko two days before his interment.

Nanay decided not to go home. I agreed.

My half-sister Joey Anne is very pleasant. May breeding at tahimik lang. Alam kung saan lulugar. I’m very sure na magiging magaling siyang nurse someday. I made her feel that it was not her fault.

Pangit nga naman na may Sally at Adora on both sides.

50/50 or 70/30?

Dalawang urn ang lumabas sa Funeraria Paz after the cremation.

Monster's Interview Self-Awareness Quiz

so i took the interview self-awareness quiz from monster. yes or no lang ang options. here are the results.

Question:

I have examined what I want to do in my career, my area(s) of interest, and the job and company traits that are important for me.

Your Answer:

Yes

Monster's Feedback:

Charging ahead and applying to jobs before truly figuring out what you want is a classic mistake. The result is wasting time on opportunities that aren't really what you want to do or perhaps even accepting a suboptimal job offer. Without proper introspection, you may also be ineffective at interviewing, because you don't demonstrate the proper focus. The more focused you are and the more you know yourself, the more successful your job search will be.

Read these articles for more information:

>>>> as of now, i am already decided to pursue my career in SAP. since 2.5 years pa lang ang experience ko, i think highly that i should focus more on the technical and functional side. eto talaga ang career ladder na target ko dahil mas attractive sa market kapag expert ka technically. pero i'm not closing my doors for management side, there will come a time that i'll be able to handle a team. nagawa ko na un before eh. pero pag nangyari ulet un, gusto ko meron pa rin sa ABAP side. mala- Sir Ric or Ralf na ABAP IS Director of Danone. mala-consultant ang dating, nde ganun kabigat ang workload sa coding pero can be consulted on the feasible technical approach or designs sa requirements.

Question:

I have a good idea of the kinds of environments I can be successful in.

Your Answer:

Yes

Monster's Feedback:

Consider this basic truth: You cannot be successful in every environment, no matter how smart or talented you are. Different industries have different cultures and operating environments. And companies within the same industry can have different atmospheres. Even teams within the same company can be drastically different from one another.

You should never accept a job where you can't succeed. Figuring out where you fit is key to determining whether you should proceed with an opportunity.

Read these articles for more information:

>>>> marami akong nicoconsider before accepting a job offer --- the team, the management and the company's processes, and the like. there was one time, may job offer ako, maganda sha at higit na mas malaki ung offer kesa sa nakukuha ko now. at isa pa eh supervisory level daw ako. pero nun malaman ko na 2 lang kame sa ABAP team eh nadisappoint ako. mukhang susulitin nila ako. yes, i am very competent in handling challenging and toxic workload but in that case i don't think it's worth it. mapolitika daw ung company na un at before ako pumasok eh nagcrash pala ang production nila kaya thanks but no thanks na lang ako sa kanila. hihi!

Question:

I have practiced my answers to common, predictable questions out loud, but I don't sound rehearsed

Your Answer:

No

Monster's Feedback:

You should practice, practice, practice for inquiries like:

Tell me about yourself.
Tell me about your most significant accomplishment.
Tell me about a time when you had to deal with conflict and how you dealt with it.
What would you do if ____? The catch is, it's best if you don't sound like you have memorized your responses verbatim. In fact, in any interview, you should be prepared but flexible based on the nuance of the question, the nature of the job and your relevant strengths.

In any case, you can't possibly prepare for every question. Go for the most probable, and remember to have examples eady.

Read these articles for more information:

Question:

I know what behavioral interviewing is and how it works.

Your Answer:

No

Monster's Feedback:

Behavioral interviewing is now the norm, not the exception. The behavioral interview starts with the interviewer structuring questions based on the competencies required for the job. These questions ask you to prove your level of competency by providing specific examples from your background.

These are essentially stories. Draw the raw material to answer behavioral interview questions from your work history -- stories about when you have succeeded and failed, complex or big projects, conflict you have experienced and difficulties you've overcome.

Behavioral interviews aren't easy, but the beautiful thing about this methodology is that if you prepare for them, you will be prepared for traditional interviews, too. Read these articles for more information:

>>>> ah un pala un?! so ibang term lang siguro for situational interviews which i am used to. hahaha!

Eight Tips To Negotiate A Higher Starting Salary

i've been google-ing a while ago on how i can negotiate wisely with prospective employers and i found nothing until i got disconnected from the VPN and so i re-logged in at AIM. luckily, an article from AOL Jobs popped up and voila! here it is --- the exact material that i've been looking for... :)

~o~0~o~0~o~0~o~0~o~0~o~0~o~0~o~0~o~0~o~0~o~0~o~0~o~0~o~0~o~0~o~0~o~0~o~0~o~0~o~0

You landed the interview, you impressed them with your credentials, skill set and enthusiasm, and now you've been called back for a second interview. You know they want to hire you. The problem is, you'd like more money than they're prepared to offer. How do you convince the decision-makers to offer you a higher starting salary without taking yourself out of the running for the job?

It's all in the preparation, attitude and presentation. Here are some tips.

Use Your Marketing Skills

1. Do Your Research
Learn as much as you can about the pay scale of the company that wants to hire you. Find out the industry average, as well. You may aspire to a career in scheduling at a major airline, but if their practice is to hire from within, you might need to accept an entry-level position. Union constraints may limit any flexibility on salary levels, no matter how many university degrees you have.

As part of your research, you need to have a clear idea of what your minimum salary expectations are. Do the math in advance and decide what your deal-breaker point is. There's no point wasting your time -- and theirs -- interviewing for a low-paying job in a company or industry that may not be able to offer the wages you need.

2. Don't Tip Your Hand
Leave the salary expectation question blank on application forms (?? -- does not apply for SAP Opps), and don't mention a specific salary level in your cover letters. You want to get past the paper screening into the "to be considered" file without anyone thinking your anticipated salary is too high. You also don't want to lock yourself into accepting an offer of $55,000 per year if the decision-makers had budgeted up to $70,000 to fill the vacancy.

Consider whether you are in a position of power. If you're in high demand elsewhere, you have leverage. Draw attention to it, but be careful not to emphasize it too much. Avoid acting overly confident or cocky. It's okay to mention that you have interviews at other companies, but don't try to force a favorable decision. (totally!!)

4. Let the Company Bring Up the Salary Issue
Avoid being the first to propose a salary figure. (??!!) Tell them you're interested in a mutually rewarding career with the company and you're sure you can agree on an acceptable compensation package. If you're backed into a corner, introduce your salary range, but make it clear that it is "up for discussion." Don't ramble on. Say what you have to and then be quiet and listen.

5. Emphasize the Benefits of Your Skills
When you talk about your last job, describe your accomplishments. Quantify your successes in terms of cost savings, increased productivity and overall contribution to the company. This will help the interviewers recognize the benefits of having you join their team, and will help boost the salary offer. If you earned performance bonuses or incentive awards, mention those so that you'll be viewed as an achiever, well worth top dollar.

6. Don't Blink
Listen to how the offer is presented. When the interviewer or prospective new boss states a salary figure, nod your head to signify you're considering it, but keep quiet. If they're low-balling you, the figure could make a quick jump in those few moments of consideration.

7. Be Reasonable
From your research, you know the offer is low. What do you counter at? If you choose 10%, you may have to accept a saw-off at 5%. Don't be confrontational. It's a calculated risk to walk away from a job offer. They might call you back with a revised starting salary or they might just close your file and hire someone else if they feel you've been greedy, arrogant or overly demanding.

8. Be Prepared to Be Flexible
If you want this job, consider agreeing to start at the salary level they're offering, so long as they offer additional bonuses for specific accomplishments. Be prepared to define them. Money is important, but consider the complete compensation package. Negotiate other perks and benefits and get them in writing. Ask about the frequency of potential salary increases. As with any negotiation, your goal is to create a win-win situation.

Believe in Yourself

Sometimes the only way you can get a higher starting salary is by being actively sought for your position. Other times, you may have to demonstrate that you have the exact skills the company needs and, if you play your cards right, you may land the job you want at a salary level beyond your dreams. In all cases, being well prepared, using a little psychology and practicing your marketing and negotiation skills will help you maximize the salary offer.

An online petition initiated by www.DogMeatTrade.com is calling to every animal-loving being out there for help in showing the Philippine government that there are indeed a lot of people out there who support a move to amend the law on animal welfare by imposing higher penalty for cruelty to animals. The amendment is referred to as the House Bill 2991.

A query at the website of the Philippine congress regarding the status of the Bill shows the following results:

HB02991 [History]
Session No.: 13-1RS-023
Significance: N
Date Filed: 2004-09-22
Full Title: AN ACT TO INCREASE THE PENALTY FOR CRUELTY TO ANIMALS, AMENDING FOR THE PURPOSE SECTION 8 OF REPUBLIC ACT NO. 8485

Principal Author: ESCUDERO, FRANCIS G.Date Read: 2004-10-26
Primary Referral: REVISION OF LAWS
Bill Status: Pending with the Committee on REVISION OF LAWS since 2004-10-26

The online petition is targeting 50,000 signatures by June 30, 2007. As of today, February 12, 2007, there are only about 6,300 signatures. We need at least 317 signatures per day till June 30 to reach or surpass that target. My personal target is 100,000, which translates to 679 signatures per day.

It can be done if you sign now and ask your friends to do the same. In fact, if you ask only 2 friends of yours that are listed in your address book, and then those two friends do the same and each asks 2 other friends to ask 2 friends each to do the same and so on and so on, the target of 100,000 signatures can be reached and surpassed in just 16 days by you and your friends' efforts alone and assuming that each email invitation is complied with only every 24 hours! You can reach a million signatures in just 20 days through the power of exponential growth! Imagine if you asked more than 2 of your friends...

I'm not saying that you go send out to everyone in your address book (but it wouldn't really hurt if you did that, too). But a whole-hearted plea to a handful of friends will go a long way for this petition. Again, let's try and harness the power of email to support this petition.

This is a legitimate initiative that will help those who are lobbying for laws that help and protect animals in the Philippines.

Thank you very much.

must read for job seekers...

Six Job Hunting Myths Debunked

Source: Robert Half International
Posted: 2007-02-02 11:17:09 @ AOL

Everyone wants to give job seekers advice, and while much of it is useful, some guidance may miss the mark. Because the employment market is constantly changing, ideas that once worked well may no longer be effective. This doesn't mean you have to second-guess everything you hear, but do be aware of common job-hunting myths, like the following:

Myth No. 1: You should keep your resume to one page; any longer, and hiring mangers won't read it.

Few employers are so rigid that they'll toss out your resume because it's more than a page long. What's more important is that the document is interesting to read, tailored specifically to the position you are applying for -- and perhaps most important -- error free. In fact, 84 percent of executives polled by Robert Half International said it takes just one or two typographical errors on a resume to remove a candidate from consideration for a job opening; 47 percent said a single typo can be the deciding factor. While a one-page resume is preferable for entry-level candidates, those with five or more years of experience may require an additional page to describe their work history and accomplishments. Keep in mind, however, you never want to lose a hiring manager's attention by providing irrelevant details.

Myth No. 2: It's pointless to request an interview with a company that isn't hiring.

Even if a company isn't planning to add staff anytime soon, chances are you can land an informational interview. Look to set up a meeting with someone -- preferably a hiring manager -- who can tell you more about the organization and provide answers to questions you can't find online or in the company's marketing materials, such as its short- and long-term business goals. Many employers will be willing to sit down with you if you show genuine interest. An informational interview probably won't result in a job offer, but you will build your professional network and, in the process, may learn of future opportunities with the firm.

Myth No. 3: If you've applied for a position and haven't heard back, it's safe to assume the position has been filled.

Just because a company hasn't contacted you doesn't mean they aren't interested. It's not uncommon for hiring managers to be so busy they delay contacting candidates for as long as two months after posting an employment ad. Don't let this discourage you; instead take action to see where you stand. An overwhelming 94 percent of executives surveyed by Robert Half International said candidates should contact hiring managers after submitting application materials; 82 percent of respondents recommend doing it -- whether by e-mail, a phone call or personalized letter -- within two weeks of submitting a resume.

Myth No. 4: The most-qualified candidates always get the job.

While employers want to hire professionals capable of doing the job -- and carefully compare candidates' education, skills and experience with the requirements of the position -- they also depend on intuition when making a decision. Forty-six percent of executives surveyed by Robert Half International said they rely heavily on instinct when making hiring decisions; another 49 percent follow their gut at least some of the time. The traits that make an employer intuitively want to hire someone often involve soft skills -- that is, your ability to get along with the rest of the team. So, if you're interested in a position for which you meet only the minimum requirements, don't immediately dismiss it. Your personality may put you on par with someone with more experience than you.

Myth No. 5: There's no room for salary negotiation in today's job market.

Demand for skilled professionals continues to outpace supply in a number of specialties, and candidates with industry experience and expertise often receive multiple offers. Researching how much those with similar qualifications in your area are being paid will help you choose the best opportunity and negotiate a reasonable rate. The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Outlook Handbook is an excellent resource, as are industry publications, such as Robert Half International's annual Salary Guide.

Myth No. 6: When times are tough, take the first job offer you get.

An extended job search can put pressure on you to accept any offer that comes your way, but do your best to avoid accepting a position that may cause more heartache than happiness. Tolerating a job you hate -- whether for a week or year -- can set you back professionally and take a toll on your well-being. You may have to accept a "less-than-perfect" role in certain situations, but don't feel guilty holding out for a position with maximum appeal if you have the financial means to do so.

Tapping a variety of sources for advice during your job search often is a smart move. But, like any investigation, you may come across clues that are somewhat misleading. Recognizing common myths early on will make your job-hunting efforts far more effective and help you land the position you seek.

the filipinos await --- ELECTION '07

after all the trigger-to-switch-channels-and-makes-me-swear-a-lot campaign advertisements of senatorial candidates that we've all watched, now comes the most awaited moment for the politicians --- the ELECTION '07. well honestly, i didn't register 'cause 1. i hate to get up really early and sweat like a pig in an infinite line of registration 2. how can i be so sure if my vote will be counted considering that there'll be a lot of ballot switchings, unusual brownouts and more ways of dayaan 3. what the hell, will my vote make a difference on the current status of our country? i guess not...

it's not just that i'm being cynical here, we've all watched the news --- ambush here, vote buying there, ignorant celebrities trying to make their way into the dirty world of politics. come on, do we see any good during elections? god! help the filipinos...

There's food for everybody 'ika nga!

Build your APTITUDE

By Dr. John C. Maxwell

In my immature days of leadership, I used to think there was only one way to lead. Then I read a classic book by Florence Littauer called Personality Plus, and it opened my eyes to the way different temperaments and different personalities create different leadership aptitudes.

Over the years, I've identified four basic aptitudes of leadership - the directional leader, the strategic leader, the team-building leader and the operational leader. Each consists of identifiable strengths and weakness.

So the goal, it might seem, is to master all four aptitudes of leadership. In reality, however, no one person scores high on all four aptitudes. Most people are dominant in one and have a secondary strength in another. That's because the four aptitudes don't fit the same type of temperament and personality.

And since no leader possesses all four leadership aptitudes, the ultimate leadership environment consists of a leadership team. Unfortunately, the tendency among leaders is to surround themselves with others who share similar aptitudes.

This happens for three reasons:
1. Magnetism
The Law of Magnetism says we attract who we are, not who we want. The first staff member I ever hired was Stan Toler, a long-time friend of mine. We were friends even before I hired him as the only other staff person at the small church I pastored. Stan is a very successful leader in his own right, but he's just like me. Thus, we always wanted the same things.
2. Insecurity
People who are insecure typically do not like diversity. They wish everybody were like them. They want everybody to think alike, and when somebody is way out there and different, it makes them nervous.
3. Humanness
It is part of human nature that people who are just like us make us feel more comfortable. When you say, "Here's what I think" and everybody else says, "Yeah, I think that, too," you can't help but feel good. People who are different from us in their leadership aptitudes have a tendency to make us feel uncomfortable.

At INJOY, our leadership team includes directing leaders, team-building leaders, strategic leaders and operational leaders. I am in tune with and enjoy the ones who are just like me the most. But the ones who help me the most are the ones who are not like me.

Those who are unlike you in leadership aptitudes are going to make you uncomfortable, not because they're wrong and you're right and not because you're wrong and they're right, but because you're different.

Shake It Off And Step Up

this is an interesting read, sent by an officemate in amkor.

A parable is told of a farmer who owned an old mule. The mule fell into the farmer's well. The farmer heard the mule 'braying' - or - whatever mules do when they fall into wells. After carefully assessing the situation, the farmer sympathized with the mule, but decided that neither the mule nor the well was worth the trouble of saving. Instead, he called his neighbors together and told them what had happened...and enlisted them to help haul dirt to bury the old mule in the well and put him out of his misery.

Initially, the old mule was hysterical! But as the farmer and his neighbors continued shoveling and the dirt hit his back...a thought struck him. It suddenly dawned on him that every time a shovel load of dirt landed on his back...HE SHOULD SHAKE IT OFF AND STEP UP! This he did, blow after blow.

"Shake it off and step up...shake it off and step up...shake it off and step up!" he repeated to encourage himself. No matter how painful the blows, or distressing the situation seemed the old mule fought "panic" and just kept right on SHAKING IT OFF AND STEPPING UP!

You're right! It wasn't long before the old mule, battered and exhausted, STEPPED TRIUMPHANTLY OVER THE WALL OF THAT WELL! What seemed like it would bury him, actually blessed him...all because of the manner in which he handled his adversity.

THAT'S LIFE! If we face our problems and respond to them positively, and refuse to give in to panic, bitterness, or self-pity...THE ADVERSITIES THAT COME ALONG TO BURY US USUALLY HAVE WITHIN THEM THE POTENTIAL TO BENEFIT AND BLESS US! Remember that FORGIVENESS--FAITH--PRAYER-- PRAISE and HOPE...all are excellent ways to "SHAKE IT OFF AND STEP UP" out of the wells in which we find ourselves!
